Maputo, Mozambique, 15 Jul – The government of Mozambique Tuesday approved the association of Empresa de Desenvolvimento de Maputo Sul (South Maputo Development Company), the entity that will manage the construction project for the bridge between the capital Maputo and the municipality of Catembe, on the other side of Maputo bay.
Under the terms of a government decree, Empresa de Desenvolvimento de Maputo Sul will also be responsible for construction of roads between Catembe and the tourist resort of Ponta do Ouro, on the border with the South African province of Kwazulu-Natal, and between the towns of Boane and Bela-Vista.
The spokesman for the Council of Ministers and the deputy Foreign Affairs minister, Henrique Banze, said that the bridge and the new roads would have tolls, “in order to ensure the sustainability of the project.”
Construction of the bridge to Catembe and the new roads will be funded by Banco Nacional de Investimentos, a bank in which the Mozambican state and Portuguese state financial group Caixa Geral de Depósitos have equal stakes of 49.5 percent and Banco Comercial de Investimentos has 1 percent.
